Service Description
Course Level: Intermediate Format: 5-Day Deep Dive Intensive (Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, with outdoor excursion Day 1) Why Take This Class? Start in nature, finish in glass. This five-day immersion merges sculpture, casting, and the Monterey Bay's raw landscape. You'll hike Point Lobos to collect photograph & sketch forms, then transform those discoveries into cast glass sculptures. Push the limits of fusing without casting. This intensive explores the technique of creating a richly detailed, sculptural images in a thick 18mm layer of glass. By plan-fully layering and pre-firing fine enamels, glass powders, and frit, you will achieve a sense of internal depth, dimensionality, and shadow that rivals painting or deep-set relief sculpture, resulting in a genuine fine-art panel. Who Is This For? Intermediate to advanced fusing artists. But don't let a lack of glass experience stop you. This course is also for makers with a strong background in traditional media who want to translate complex 2D concepts into 3D glass. What You'll Learn 18mm Volume Control: Understanding the critical firing curve and ramp-down schedule necessary for fusing ultra-thick glass. Enamel & Powder Sifting: Precision application for fine-line details, atmospheric effects, and sharp-edged imagery. Frit Layering for Depth: Strategic use of coarse and fine frit to create multiple image planes that appear to float within the 18mm thickness. Sculptural Relief & Design: Principles for designing a composition that utilizes light and internal shadow for a three-dimensional effect. Advanced Firing Curve: Achieving a full fuse while retaining subtle texture and internal movement that adds to the work's complexity. Cold Shop Edge Finishing: Techniques for grinding and polishing the thick edges to maximize light transmission and clarity. Important to Know Prior Experience: Intro level fusing courses, or deep experience in 2d media Class Size: Maximum 5 artists Materials: Glass supplies are provided though attendee may bring their own as well.
